What is Income Protection Insurance?
You can never know for sure if you’ll be fit to work next week, or even tomorrow. Income Protection pays up to 60% of your gross income (tax-free) if you are unable to work due to accident, injury, or illness – allowing your family to continue paying essential household bills and living expenses.
Government benefits may not be enough to cover mortgage payments, let alone other bills, and they’re not available to everyone and are notoriously hard to claim on. We strongly recommend you don’t rely on government benefits to get you through, especially if your family has a mortgage to pay.
What does Income Protection Insurance provide?
Income Protection has some similarities to Critical Illness Cover but also many differences. Your advisor will be able to help you decide which one is appropriate for your situation.
- Income Protection provides your family financial security if you are unable to work due to illness or injury.
- It pays up to 60% of your gross income (tax-free) as monthly payments throughout the term of the policy, or until you retire or return work.
- It covers most conditions that leave you unable to work, and you can make multiple claims.
Types of Income Protection Insurance
Deferred Period
You can reduce the cost of your policy by setting a deferred period of up to 12 months after you are unable to work. This is useful if your work offers sick pay for a certain amount of time or if you have emergency savings. For example, say your work offers 3 months full sick pay and you have some savings that could last a further 3 months. Then you may want to reduce your premium by setting your policy to start paying out 6 months after you stopped working instead of immediately.
Flexible Levels of Insurance
There are different levels of insurance. Full cover pays until you retire or return to work if you are fit and able to. Or you can reduce your premium by choosing a policy that will pay out for a maximum of 2 years.
Who Needs Income Protection Insurance ?
Anyone whose children or partner are dependent on their income to pay a mortgage, debts, or living expenses. This includes the self-employed, who are particularly at risk due to lack of sick pay. And anyone who wants to make sure they can still fund most of their current lifestyle if they are unable to work.
